This course introduces students to an overview of art history, discussion of the value and purpose of the arts in society, exploration of art careers and the hands on opportunity to create art using a variety of media.

The semesters are divided according to the project or medium. Each unit includes connection to history, culture, careers and fundamental observation of how art is made of the elements and principles of art. Students are also required to develop the ability to make aesthetic judgements and communicate about their art and the art of others. Students develop written, visual and oral communication skills.

Students come into the class with little knowledge of art and leave having tried many art forms They gain the awareness that art has social, expressive and commercial value around the world.

Fall Semester

  1. (graphite pencil) Introduction to elements and principles of art and Drawing skill part one
  2. (3d paper mache') Mask project
  3. (acrylic) Still life, landscape painting and pointillism.
  4. FINAL EXAM

Spring Semester

  1. (3d clay) Ceramics - slab construction container.
  2. (Writing) Artist biography. A work of art imitating the style of the artist.
  3. (Photoshop) Computer graphics. Create a small business image - Logo, letter head, business card.
  4. (3d paper mache') Art is entertainment. Students, make puppets, sets and perform a puppet show.
  5. FINAL EXAM
